Galactic Era is a grand space strategy board game centered on exploration, expansion, and combat. Its standout feature is the choice between the “dark” or “light” side, each with its own set of consequences, though you can switch alignments during gameplay. The game minimizes luck, featuring deterministic combat with hidden information (no dice involved).

Victory can be achieved through various strategies, whether peaceful or warlike. Alignment affects player interactions: “Light” (STO) factions can form alliances with advanced civilizations but cannot intervene with primitive ones, maintain peaceful relations with other STO players, and remain peaceful with STS players unless provoked. In contrast, “Dark” (STS) factions can adopt any attitude from peaceful to aggressive and can subjugate primitive planets.

Players develop their civilizations across five technology fields—Military, Spirituality, Propulsion, Robotics, and Genetics—with those specializing in one area gaining epic powers. Cooperation is key, with technology trading among players.

Choose from 17 unique factions, each with distinct powers, sometimes even two (one for each alignment). The fog of war adds uncertainty by concealing fleets and their tactical options, creating a Rock-Paper-Scissors dynamic among them. Secret objectives provide players with surprise powers and encourage diverse strategies. The game features a highly variable setup that influences objectives and a rich background story inspired by secret space programs, UFO/ET witness accounts, and channeled material.
