Commands & Colors: Medieval builds on the successful Commands & Colors system with a focus on historical depth and strategic gameplay. While the game remains accessible and not overly complex, it introduces new concepts that enhance its historical flavor. Players will encounter familiar elements from other Commands & Colors games, such as the deck of Medieval Command cards that drive movement and create a “fog of war,” and the battle dice that facilitate swift and efficient combat resolution. The game features stylized battlefield maps that emphasize crucial terrain and historical troop deployments, with flexible scales that vary between battles. In some scenarios, a unit might represent a large contingent of soldiers, while in others, it could be just a handful of warriors. The tactical decisions you make will align closely with the strengths and limitations of medieval unit types, their weapons, and the historical context.
The scenario book highlights medieval battles between the Byzantine Empire and the Sassanid Persians (530 to 627 AD), with additional scenarios involving the Moors and their rebel allies (645 - 648 AD). This period of Byzantine history was marked by constant evolution, with the empire adapting its army to include more armored cavalry and missile troops. The strategic adaptability of the Byzantines in response to their adversaries played a key role in the enduring strength of their Empire.
