The Lamps Are Going Out: World War 1 2nd Edition
The Lamps Are Going Out is a grand strategic-level game that simulates the complexities of World War I. Designed to simplify economic and military factors for ease of play, the game still captures the strategic balance, constraints, and critical decision-making of the war. It pits the Central Powers against the Triple Entente, covering the entire conflict from August 1914 to November 1918.
The game’s area control map spans Europe, the Near East, East Africa, and the Atlantic, incorporating land and naval warfare, from the British blockade to the German U-Boat campaign. Players command field armies, conducting movements and offensives to deplete enemy forces, achieve breakthroughs, and gain territory. Mobilizing and maintaining armies require careful allocation of scarce Production Points, reflecting each nation’s industrial capacity, manpower, logistics, and training.
Players also compete to achieve technological superiority, investing in advances like aviation, artillery, U-Boats, and poison gas. Event cards add historical depth, simulating political, leadership, and military developments unique to each faction, while Technology cards allow for innovation across multiple branches.
While players have the freedom to choose their strategies, the game’s realistic representation of geography, resources, and manpower creates dilemmas akin to those faced by historical leaders. Playable in an evening, the game’s streamlined production and combat mechanics allow the war to unfold with historical authenticity while encouraging diverse strategies.
