In the year Universal Century 0079, a cluster of Space Colonies calling itself the Principality of Zeon declares independence from the Earth Federation, and subsequently launched a war of independence known as the One Year War. Zeon, though smaller, has the tactical upper hand through their use of a new type of humanoid weapons called Mobile Suits. Half of all humanity perishes within the first week of the conflict, the war settled into a bitter eight month stalemate.
