BattleLore uses the Commands & Colors system, a streamlined wargaming framework created by Richard Borg. In this system, the battlefield is divided into three sections: left flank, center, and right flank. Players use a deck of Command Cards—divided into Section and Tactics cards—to activate units and execute special maneuvers. Battles are resolved using custom Battle Dice, making for fast-paced, strategic gameplay. BattleLore blends this core system with a fantasy theme, introducing magic, creatures, and unique abilities for a rich tactical experience.
