In Cooper Island, set in the age of exploration, players arrive at a distant island to establish a new home. Each player embarks on a quest to colonize their section of this expansive island by strategically placing landscape tiles. These tiles provide valuable resources, which players use to construct buildings with unique abilities. To further explore the island, players must remove barriers that obstruct their path.

A distinctive feature of Cooper Island is its victory point system. Players use small ship markers to track their progress as they navigate around the island, uncovering smaller inshore islands that offer valuable benefits. The game concludes after five rounds, with the player who has developed their territory the most effectively and advanced the furthest with their ships emerging as the winner.
