During the American Revolutionary War (1775–83), German auxiliary troops played a crucial role in the British war efforts. While the majority of these troops were from Hessen-Cassel (see the first volume of this study), other regions such as Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Hessen-Hanau, Waldeck and Pyrmont, Brandenburg Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and Anhalt-Zerbst also contributed soldiers. This volume also discusses the involvement of Hanoverian troops in the sieges of Gibraltar and Menorca. From Saratoga to Yorktown, these hired soldiers were essential in providing the Crown Forces with manpower and specialized combat skills, notably the Jäger, experts in open-order warfare. With eight commissioned artwork plates and a selection of carefully chosen illustrations, many in color, this comprehensive study examines the organization, uniforms, weapons, and equipment of these troops who fought for King George in the New World.
