With the defeat of the Germans and Italians on Sicily in mid-July 1943, the focus shifted to the battle for the Italian mainland. This campaign, often referred to as the "forgotten" one, saw the use of successful tactical air power by USAAF forces, Free French and Italian co-belligerent units, British and Commonwealth units, and even a squadron from the Brazilian Air Force. Despite challenges such as limited replacements and resources, Operation Bingo was a success in cutting off supplies to the German forces on the Gothic Line. In Mediterranean Sweep, renowned aviation expert Tom Cleaver draws on first-hand accounts from American, Allied, German, and Italian pilots and aircrew to bring to life the intense aerial combat over Italy from mid-1943 to the end of World War II. This 320-page softcover book is a continuation of Cleaver's previous work, Turning the Tide, which covers the USAAF's involvement in North Africa and Sicily.
