The core mechanic of this new army revolves around managing gambles. Players earn gambles by discarding tokens, which can later be spent to activate the unique traits of units on the board, as their abilities require gambles to be triggered. For instance, the Headhunter has a standard ranged attack, but spending a gamble allows it to perform a powerful sniper shot. If a trait isn't paid for, it simply won't activate.

Merchant Guild soldiers typically have low initiative, which is crucial because the cost of activating a perk is equal to the unit's initiative. For example, activating the Headhunter's Sniper ability costs one gamble, whereas another soldier with an initiative of 2 will require two gambles. Players can manage up to 7 gambles at a time, providing plenty of strategic flexibility.
