This valiant English soldier, born in Somerset, fought alongside his friend William Waller in the German wars. He rose to prominence during the English Civil War, becoming Lieutenant-General of the West and achieving fame in the battles of Stratton Hill, Lansdown Hill, and Roundway Down.

He sustained a severe injury at Lansdown, possibly never fully recovering, and later faced defeat at Cheriton against Waller. Appointed General of the Ordnance, he commanded the Army of the West in the final stages of the war, but was ultimately outmatched by the New Model Army at Torrington, leading to his surrender.
