The Covenanters were Scottish patriots who rose up in 1638 against King Charles I’s attempt to impose changes on their church. They signed the National Covenant, pledging to defend their religious freedom. While siding with Parliament during the English Civil War, their goal was not to overthrow the monarchy. They remained loyal to the royal line and later fought against Parliament in support of the Stuarts. The Covenanters were a formidable force, well-equipped, highly motivated, and led by experienced officers who had fought in the Thirty Years’ War. Their distinctive Hodden Grey uniforms made them a striking presence on the battlefield.
