Pike & Shotte: Lord Astley

Astley, a seasoned soldier with experience in both Danish and Dutch armies, fought valiantly for the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. He participated in major battles like Edgehill and the Battles of Newbury, and led the Royalist infantry at Naseby. He was also at the helm of the last Royalist field army at Stow-on-the-Wold, a battle marking the end of the war. Despite his capture, he displayed a stoic and defiant spirit, famously saying to his captors, “You have done your work, now go and play, unless you fall out among yourselves.”
