This book provides a detailed account and visual representation of the uniforms and personal equipment worn by the troops from the Midwestern and Western states who fought for the Union during the American Civil War. As the war dragged on, both the Union and Confederacy mobilized large numbers of soldiers, which required a significant expansion of military logistics to clothe, equip, and sustain the troops on various fronts, from California to Virginia.

The third volume in a three-part series, this work focuses on the soldiers of the Union from the Midwestern and Western states, examining their uniforms, insignia, and personal gear. While most of these soldiers were infantry, a significant number also served in artillery, cavalry, and specialized units like riflemen and engineers. The book includes eight plates of original artwork depicting both officers and enlisted men, as well as rare photographs of soldiers and their uniforms from some of the most extensive collections in the U.S.
