Under the Southern Cross: The South American Republics in the Age of Fighting Sail
Under the Southern Cross is the fourth volume in the acclaimed Flying Colors series, focusing on naval combat in the southern part of South America. The game spans from the Wars of Independence starting in 1810 to the final naval battle between Argentina and Uruguay in 1841, a war fought entirely under sail. Players can explore the maritime conflicts involving Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. These conflicts saw naval officers from the Napoleonic Wars and the rise of the first generation of Latin American naval heroes.
The updated rules introduce new elements like river and tidal currents, modified grounding rules for operations in the Rio de la Plata and Uruguay rivers, and the use of ship's boats to tow stranded ships. The game includes over two dozen battle scenarios, from small skirmishes to large fleet actions, as well as a return of the popular ship duel map and activation cards from Serpents of the Seas (Flying Colors volume II), featuring 18 ship duel scenarios.
Under the Southern Cross is fully compatible with other volumes in the series while remaining independent. Everything you need to play is included. Will you side with the Spanish to crush the rebel American governments and preserve the Spanish Empire, or help the Patriots fight for independence against European monarchies?
