In June 2014, Islamist extremists seized control of large areas of Iraq and Syria, including Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city. We Are Coming, Nineveh! is a tactical/operational-level game that recounts the intense campaign that followed, focusing on the liberation of West Mosul by Iraqi security forces between February and July 2017.
In this two-player game, players take on the roles of either the Iraqi security forces or Daesh (also known as ISIS). Players first determine their operational priorities, setting the stage for their objectives. They then choose additional capabilities to bring into the fight, with over four dozen options—including units, weapons, fire support, intelligence, advisors and training, and defensive preparations—ensuring that each playthrough is unique.
This preparation leads to an intense tactical battle for control of the streets and neighborhoods of the city. The game uses blocks and area movement to simulate the "fog of war," with a detailed map that captures the complex urban terrain of West Mosul, particularly the dense Old City. Event cards can be triggered at any time, introducing tactical challenges, moral dilemmas, or the potential for collateral damage. The gameplay is intuitive, engaging, and designed to be highly realistic.
